Recovery and Hope

Written by  Katie Hultgren

Nature has shown us its absolute power over the course of the past few months. Damage, destruction and lives lost will make the 2017 hurricane season a sad chapter in history. Hurricane Harvey in late August put Houston, TX underwater. Hurricane Irma, followed closely by Hurricane Maria, devastated parts of the Caribbean.

The situation in these areas changes so quickly that it is very hard to accurately report on progress made towards recovery. Despite the tragic reports of loss, there are also so many uplifting stories of people helping each other, physically, financially, materially and emotionally. The human spirit is itself a force of nature.
The Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) is doing an amazing job as a clearinghouse of information, providing updates about each country, their infrastructure, transportation, and resorts.

In addition, they have a fundraising campaign:
The Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association (CHTA) is also providing up-to-date news and information about hurricane recovery in all of the affected regions. Their website provides information about several specific fundraising efforts.
To keep tourism dollars flowing to the Caribbean, their round-up of areas with and without hurricane damage is informative, and updated regularly.

Our thoughts are also with Mexico, where several states and cities were heavily damaged by earthquakes, and California where hundreds of thousands of acres were burned by wildfires.
