The Riviera Maya

Written by  Lisa Loverro

Latin-MayaOne of the most popular tourist destinations in Mexico, the Riviera Maya extends along the Caribbean coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula from Puerto Morelos to the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve. Once home to small fishing villages, the Riviera Maya coastline has since been developed into a modern tourist attraction, with everything from all-inclusive resorts and boutique hotels to fine dining. An ideal vacation destination, the Riviera Maya is home to some of the most stunningly beautiful beaches in all of Mexico with expansive stretches of powdery white sand and the clear turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea. The Riviera Maya is home to the world’s second largest coral reef just a short distance offshore. With the Mayan ruins of Tulum and Coba nearby, the region is truly a perfect destination for sightseeing, water sports and all around sun worshipping.

The show, the first permanent production outside of Las Vegas and Orlando, will call the custom-built, 600-seat Vidanta Theater (by Grupo Vidanta) home and will be the first-of-its-kind dinner spectacle. As with all Cirque du Soleil shows, it’s name has much significance. This show, “Joya,” is rooted in the Spanish “joya” meaning jewel or pearl and tells the story of an alchemist and his granddaughter embarking on a transformative quest to uncover the secrets of life. The show will be performed eight times a week throughout the year and the theater is located across from the Mayan Palace Resort.
