Vestnorden Conference Akureyi, Iceland

JAXFAX recently had the pleasure of attending the 40th Annual Vestnorden conference.

The Vestnorden is an annual travel trade show organized by the North Atlantic Tourism Association (NATA), whose membership is made of tourism providers located in Greenland, the Faroe Islands, and Iceland. For any travel advisor or travel wholesaler doing business in any of these amazing nature/adventure destinations the Vestnorden is the annual conference you need to attend.

The trade show floor is organized in the scheduled meeting format with 15 minute meetings. While the meeting are just long enough to get a sense of whether two companies are a good fit, the Vestnorden provides ample networking events where you can get to know potential business partners better and close a deal. This is definitely the conference to attend to make all the right contacts in transportation, hotels, and tourism attractions in the West Nordic region.

The trade show rotates between the three destinations, in the following pattern; Faroe Island, Iceland, Greenland, Iceland, Fareoe Islands etc. The 2025 iteration of the Vestnorden was held in Akureyi, Iceland from September 30th to October 1st. Akureyi, the capital of North Iceland, is a short 45 minute flights from Reykjavik’s domestic airport. The 2025 show was attended by over 540 participants from 41 different countries- truly a testament to the importance of attending the Vestnorden if you want to do business in these premier North Atlantic adventure destinations.

Each country has its own character, culture, traditions and history, but they share incredible nature, a warm welcome and an unlimited range of things to see and do. The West Nordic region is something special.

Iceland is perfect for those that want an adventure destination, yet with all the infrastructure that comes with being a modern European country. Hotels range from modest to truly luxurious.

The Faroe Islands are a grouping of 18 main islands located halfway between Iceland and Norway. With a population of approximately 54,000 people this is a destination for those seeking spectacular nature, good infrastructure, and cultural uniqueness. Many of the islands are connected by undersea tunnels and the Faroes feature the only underwater traffic circle in the world.

If you have true hard-core adventure seekers, then contacts in Greenland are what is required. While Greenland has accommodations that range from rustic to 4 star hotels, this is truly an adventure destination. There are no roads between towns and villages, so means of travel are either by boat, plane or dog sleds.

All three destinations are unique yet as they are situated in the North Atlantic, the area’s geographical remoteness has preserved an authentic world of wonderful cultural traditions and natural phenomena.

The next Vestnorden will be held September 22-23, in Nuuk Greenland. Registration fee for buyers normally include airfare from an Icelandair North American gateway city, airport transfers, 3 nights accommodations, most meals, and multiple networking functions. One of the really nice features of the Vestnorden is that in addition to available pre/post tours to all 3 destinations (extra cost), included with conference registration is a 4 day excursion in the host city.
