Mendoza: A Luxury Getaway in Argentina’s Wine Country
In the foothills of the Andes Mountains,
the city of Mendoza, Argentina, is a paradise for wine enthusiasts and luxury travelers. Known for its world-class Malbecs, (along with superb full-bodied whites), and stunning landscapes, this region offers an exquisite blend of relaxation, adventure, and gastronomy. With top-tier accommodations and Michelin-starred dining, Mendoza promises an unforgettable escape. I recently ventured down to check out a stunning new “wine spa,” sample wines, and indulge in the gastronomy of this majestic region in Argentina.
Arrive in Style
Flying directly into Buenos Aires, there are several domestic airline options to choose from. I flew the unparalleled comfort of Delta One, with direct flights from Atlanta, and seasonal direct service (October-April) from New York’s JFK. With lie-flat seats, premium dining, and impeccable service the tone was set for my upcoming adventure. American Airlines also operates nonstop from New York, Dallas and Miami. Upon arrival in Buenos Aires, a short domestic flight finally landed me in Mendoza, the heart of Argentina’s wine country.
Luxury Accommodations
I was excited to check out the latest addition to grace the luxury hospitality scene in Mendoza, the SB Winemaker Spa Suites (www.susanabalbohotels.com). This “wine-spa” retreat is owned by Argentina’s first female winemaker, Susana Balbo, and features just seven suites with a fully integrated in-room spa, including a steam shower, and aromatherapy tubs. Four out of the seven suites also come equipped with a sauna, and all are set among a perfectly manicured garden in a private estate-type setting. Enjoying a spa treatment in the privacy of your room after a long flight was ideal. Treatments incorporate creams and scrubs infused with wine and grape seeds coming directly from Susana’s vineyard, located off the property.
Closer to the foothills of the Andes in the Uco Valley, with spectacular mountain views, I then ventured to the tiny homes of La Morada Lodge (www.lamoradalodge.com), which offer a cozy and sophisticated escape nestled within the property’s vineyard. Each tiny home is thoughtfully designed with modern amenities, including a kitchenette, a comfortable living area, individual hot tubs, and an outdoor space perfect for stargazing. The personalized service and the opportunity to explore the vineyard at your doorstep make La Morada the perfect choice for anyone looking for a romantic honeymoon destination.
The standout feature of La Morada Lodge is their on-site restaurant, El Hornero, where I enjoyed traditional Argentinian dishes prepared with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Along with an extensive wine cellar and unique cocktail menu, two ovens are at the soul of Hornero, where the unique flavors of Mendoza’s wood embers pair perfectly with their local ingredients. From the homemade bread, which I honestly could not stop devouring, to the grilled meats and vegetarian options, this restaurant is a must-visit whether you are staying on the property or just stopping by for a romantic dinner among the vineyards.
Culinary Delights
Mendoza’s culinary scene is as impressive as its wines, with several Michelin-starred restaurants that promise an extraordinary dining experience. Here are some must-visit spots.
Helmed by legendary Argentinian chief, Francis Mallman, 1884 Restaurante, located inside a historic winery, serves up a traditional Argentinian menu of meats and fish, reflective of the chef’s inventive fire-based cooking technique. A stylish, contemporary setting in the main dining room and a landscaped, outdoor terrace ensures a memorable dining experience.
If you prefer to check out the downtown scene in Mendoza, Azafrán is located in the heart of the bustling city. Named after the saffron spice, Azafrán is a Michelin-starred restaurant and a staple in the city’s dining scene. Offering a six-course or ten-course dining experience, the restaurant boasts an impressive wine cellar, allowing you to choose the perfect pairing for your meal. Dinner here was fun and lively. If your clients are traveling with a group, request a private table for them in the back wine room.
Located on Susana Balbo’s vineyard, the Osadía de Crear restaurant offers a wine-pairing dining experience in a stylish environment. Using the freshest seasonal ingredients, there are four or six-course tasting menus, all paired with wines from her estate. The grounds are magnificently landscaped, and I finally got my first glimpse of the snow-capped Andes from the property. The elegant setting and attentive service make every meal a memorable event.
Adventure in the Andes
While the wine and food are undoubtedly highlights, Mendoza offers much more to explore. Adventure seekers can embark on excursions such as horseback riding through the vineyards, hiking in the Andes, or even hot air ballooning over the picturesque landscape. For a more leisurely experience, a guided tour of the local wineries will educate your clients on the winemaking process.
