Ancient Shores, Modern Luxury: Viking Mars from Athens to Istanbul
A Voyage Through the Heart of Mediterranean History
For travelers seeking a seamless blend of luxury and historical depth, the Viking Mars itinerary from Athens to Istanbul offers an immersive journey through some of the Mediterranean’s most significant cultural landmarks. In fact, each port of call on this eight-night voyage is connected to a defining chapter in the story of Western civilization, bringing history vividly to life at every stop.
In addition to the itinerary, the Viking Mars is understated luxury so there will never be a time when you are not pampered or involved in an excursion that includes archaeological sites, medieval crusader history, biblical sites, and cultural treasures of both Greece and Turkey.
In fact, the Viking Mars cruise itinerary on this journey could be considered one of the most historically rich itineraries in the eastern Mediterranean.
Scandinavian Luxury at Sea
The Viking Mars has been sailing since 2022. It holds roughly 930 guests and is an adult-only experience with the minimum age being 18.
If you are a Viking Cruise River fan, this ship is a bigger, more luxurious offering and it is far less crowded than other mainstream cruise ships on the same route.
The staterooms offer a private veranda, heated bathroom floors, king-size beds, large showers, and the ship is designed in Viking’s signature Scandinavian style with light wood, clean lines, and welcoming public spaces.
One of Viking’s signature features is its complimentary Nordic Spa with a sauna, steam room, snow grotto, cold plunge pool, hydrotherapy pool, and there is also the infinity pool at the stern with magnificent views while sailing through the Aegean Sea.
There are a number of restaurants onboard. Some require reservations, and you can choose from Manfredi’s Italian Restaurant to the Chef’s Table, World Café, Mamsen’s Scandinavian café, and afternoon tea in the Wintergarden lounge assuring every guest will find the perfect way to please their tastebuds.
Exploring Ancient Athens
My colleague and I boarded in Athens, Greece where trips were offered before embarkation. Visitors can take in the highlights of this area before sailing including the Acropolis of Athens, Parthenon, Acropolis Museum, and Plaka historic district.
Each day at each stop guests are offered a morning and afternoon free excursion. Viking also offers several additional excursions for a fee if you want to eat locally, go off the beaten path or would just like one of the more detailed options that catches your eye.
Crete: Home of the Minoans
Our first stop after leaving Athens was the island of Crete.
Crete is a good stop for a lesson in ancient Minoan history, Europe’s earliest recorded civilization. There were monasteries to tour, traditional villages, local olive oil and wine tastings and archeological museums.
The capital of Crete is Heraklion and the island is home to beaches, mountains and this is also the island where the distinct mantinades – couplets of love accompanied by Cretan instruments could break out at cafes where patrons can be found sipping tsikoudia, a grape-based brandy distilled in the hills of Crete.
Rhodes and the Legacy of the Crusaders
Our next stop was Rhodes. The medieval Old Town of Rhodes is one of the best-preserved Crusader cities in Europe. Here the highlights for excursions include the medieval walls, cobblestone streets, and harbor views.
Another highlight is the Palace of the Grand Masters which is a sprawling fortification and a true must-see.
The historic quarter here is also Europe’s largest medieval town. If you venture outside the city, you will find forests of pine and cypress on mountain slopes and there are also vineyards and groves of olives and citrus that happily grow in the Aegean sun.
Ephesus: One of the Ancient World’s Greatest Cities
After Rhodes, the Viking Mars enters Turkey with a first stop in Kusadasi and Ephesus.
In Ephesus there is the Library of Celsus, the Great Theatre, the Basilica of St. John, the site of the Temple of Artemis.
Overall, Ephesus has been noted as one of the most extraordinary ancient cities in the Mediterranean and definitely one of the most well-preserved.
Archeological excavations date back to the 10th century BC and remember; the Temple of Artemis is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
Troy: Walking in the Footsteps of Legends
Troy (Canakkale) is a real history lovers stop with excursions to archaeological ruins, and this was also the location of the legendary setting of Homer’s Iliad.
Istanbul: Where Continents and Cultures Converge
The final stop on the Viking Mars cruise is in Istanbul where Europe and Asia meet.
Istanbul was the cultural crossroads along the famous Silk Road and one of the city’s most stunning centerpieces is the Hagia Sophia, founded as a basilica and converted to a mosque and then a museum. It is now a mosque featuring mosaics and frescoes.
Istanbul’s famed Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar are also essential stops, with the Grand Bazaar in particular offering an unforgettable immersion into the city’s vibrant energy, history, and timeless trading culture.
The Spiritual Tradition of the Whirling Dervishes
A real highlight of Istanbul is a visit to experience the whirling dervishes who are members of the Mevlevi Order, a Sufi Muslim mystical tradition founded in the 13th century in Turkey.
The term refers to the performers of a spiritual practice called the Sema ceremony and is most associated with the poet and mystic Rumi.
The whirling dervishes perform a slow, controlled spinning dance that looks ceremonial—and it is. The whirling is not entertainment in origin but a form of spiritual meditation, this is also one of the excursions offered on the Viking Mars so guests can experience this ceremony.
A Grand Finale at the Crossroads of Continents
Istanbul straddles two continents—Europe and Asia—where the Bosphorus becomes more than a waterway: instead, a living boundary between worlds, histories, and empires. It is a city that lives in two worlds at once ancient and modern, East and West, layered in centuries of empire and exchange.
Arriving here aboard Viking Mars provides a fitting conclusion to a voyage defined by sophistication and discovery. After days spent tracing the Aegean’s storied coastlines in quiet comfort, the experience concludes as it began—measured, elegant, and deeply connected to a strong place in history. It is less a cruise that ends than a passage that lingers, with Istanbul offering a grand and fitting finale at the crossroads of continents.
