The Importance of Belonging
In this issue you will find several reviews of recent Consortia and Host Agency conferences

that I have attended. What these all had in common was they were put on by organizations whose sole mission is to increase the sales and productivity of their Travel Advisor members. And the Travel Advisors that attended these conferences went back to their agencies reinvigorated and with an updated “toolbox” to help them better sell travel to their clients.
These conferences got me thinking about how important it is for Travel Advisors to belong to these organizations dedicated to their success. In today’s rapidly evolving travel industry, independent travel advisors are discovering that success is far more achievable when they’re part of something bigger. Whether you’re just starting out or are a seasoned professional looking to scale, joining a travel consortia or aligning with a host agency can provide vital support, tools, and opportunities. Here’s why every travel agent should consider this strategic move:
Increased Buying Power & Better Commission Levels
One of the most immediate benefits of belonging to a consortia or host agency is access to higher commission rates. These organizations leverage the collective sales volume of all their affiliated agents to negotiate preferred supplier agreements. As a result, individual agents earn more per booking than they likely would on their own. This increased revenue potential directly boosts profitability and helps agents remain competitive.
Access to Exclusive Offers and Marketing Tools
Consortia and host agencies often provide marketing support that would be cost-prohibitive for independent agents to produce on their own. These include branded brochures, direct mail campaigns, email marketing, social media content, and promotional materials featuring exclusive packages and pricing not available to the general public.
Training and Professional Development
Ongoing education is essential in an industry where products, protocols, and technologies are constantly changing. These organizations offer webinars, online courses, destination training, certification programs, and in-person conferences to help agents stay informed and sharp. This support is especially valuable for new agents navigating the learning curve.
Technology and Booking Platforms
Most host agencies and consortia provide access to powerful booking platforms, CRM tools, and itinerary management software. These technologies streamline the booking process, manage client interactions more efficiently, and often integrate with marketing efforts. This infrastructure can significantly reduce the operational burden on agents.
Community and Support
Being an independent agent doesn’t mean working in isolation. Belonging to a host agency or consortia gives you access to a network of peers, mentors, and support staff. Whether you’re troubleshooting an issue or seeking inspiration, the ability to connect with others in the industry is both comforting and empowering.
Credibility and Consumer Confidence
Consumers are more likely to trust agents affiliated with well-known travel networks. These affiliations signal professionalism, legitimacy, and access to vetted travel partners. Being part of a reputable consortia or host agency enhances your brand image and reassures clients they’re working with a knowledgeable and well-connected advisor.
Back-End Support and Business Services
Many host agencies provide essential back-office functions like accounting, commission tracking, invoicing, and legal compliance. These services allow agents to focus on what they do best—selling travel and building client relationships—while reducing administrative overhead.
In a competitive landscape, travel agents need every advantage they can get. Joining a consortia or host agency provides the tools, support, and connections that make long-term success not just possible, but probable. From higher commissions and marketing power to community and credibility, these partnerships offer value that far outweighs their cost. For agents who are serious about growing their business, this is not just an option—it’s a necessity.
