Gipuzkoa and San Sebastián: Just a Flight Away from New York!

Azahara Domínguez, head of the Tourism Department of the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council, recently visited New York with representatives from Gipuzkoa’s tourism and incentive agencies to showcase the region’s attractions to American tour operators.

Starting in June 2025, United Airlines will offer direct flights from New York to Bilbao, just 45 minutes from Gipuzkoa, creating new opportunities for the region to attract American tourists.

Domínguez emphasized that American visitors are highly valued for their sustainable and authentic travel preferences. Gipuzkoa, renowned for its haute cuisine and cultural heritage, offers a unique destination with its own identity and language, making it particularly appealing to American travelers.

According to Turespaña, in 2024 there was a 10% increase in the number of American visitors to the Basque Country, highlighting the growing interest in the region.

Two information sessions were recently held in New York, attracting over 70 American tourism professionals interested in adding Gipuzkoa to their destinations. Magí Castelltort, Consul of Tourist Affairs of Spain in New York, noted that New York is experiencing a “Basque moment,” with a growing appreciation for Basque culture and cuisine.

Key highlights for American tourists include:
Climate: Mild and sunny weather is a top preference.
Safety: A key concern, as American travelers seek secure destinations.
Unique Culture: Euskadi’s distinctive traditions, festivals, and language are major draws.
Heritage: The region’s rich history and Belle Epoque architecture attract visitors.
Gastronomy: Local cuisine is a central part of the travel experience.

Gipuzkoa is positioned to become a top destination for American tourists seeking high-quality, sustainable, and authentic travel experiences.
